Let’s be real…when most people shop for candles, they’re thinking about scent first. But if you want a candle that burns as beautifully as it smells, the wick matters. Like, a lot. There are a few main types of candle wicks out there. And no, they’re not all created equal.
Types of Candle Wicks - The most common ones you’ll run into.
Wooden Wicks
These give off that soft crackling sound that feels super cozy. Aesthetically? Love it. But they require more maintenance and can be a little unpredictable, especially with pure soy wax.
Hemp Wicks
Natural and trendy, hemp wicks are often praised for being eco-friendly. But depending on the wax blend and jar size, they can burn too fast or create excess soot.
Core Wicks (Zinc or Paper)
These have a core that helps them stay upright in the wax. They’re commonly used, but not all are created clean. Zinc-core wicks, for example, are a no for us due to potential heavy metal exposure which may contain lead, which can release harmful toxins when burned.
Cotton Wicks (Our Pick)
Simple, classic, and clean-burning. We use high-quality, lead-free cotton braided wicks designed to work beautifully in soy wax. They offer a steady, even burn, reduce carbon buildup, and are bendable enough to adjust with natural wax types. They're also a great fit for paraffin and coconut wax too—but we’re all about soy.
Why We Chose Cotton Wicks
At the end of the day, we wanted something consistent, low-maintenance, and clean. Our high-quality cotton braided wicks ticked every box:
- Even, reliable burn
- Minimal mushrooming (that little carbon ball at the tip)
- Reduced soot (with proper candle care)
- Great scent throw
- Safe and non-toxic
- Perfect match for soy wax
You don’t need to babysit the flame or trim it every five minutes. That said, we do recommend trimming your wick to ¼ inch before each burn to keep things clean and steady.
Light it, enjoy the vibe, and let the scent do its thing.
